I am a fan of letters (obviously) and love this open letter format. Thank you for this sweet and sentimental reminder of the power of language and gratitude I have for the teachers who have impacted me along my journey.

Love that quote but have also heard something similar as in, “music is the blood of the soul.” That parallel makes sense, if you say that music is the most universal language…
You’re lucky — I didn’t learn anything from my high school Spanish teachers. Instead, I’m forever indebted to the Spanish-speaking immigrant cooks who worked with me in kitchens through high school and college. Actually, I did learn one thing from my freshman Spanish teacher. We probably spent half a semester reciting the lyrics to Rayando el Sol by Maná. It remains my go-to for karaoke nights in Mexico.
If you and Anya are ever in Oaxaca, hit me up. And glad to hear that you and Michael will soon get to hang out.
I recently emailed my Latin teacher who had a similar impact on my intellectual development. Reaching out to old teachers is underrated.

Sounds like I’ll have to make a trip to Oaxaca just for a night of karaoke en español - I’m in!
