I fully resonate with the quality of sleep having more to do with how you wake up than how many hours you get. Sometimes six hours feels like nine. And for late nights, sometimes I don’t know how late I went to bed and if I wake up at my regular time I still feel decently well rested. It’s definitely a mystery to me!
Iris and I have also been spending a lot of time talking about interior design lately as we furnish our current rental and plan/daydream the house we want to build starting next year.
Your section on the home tour reminds me of taste as status signaling versus self-awareness. I realize there is another dimension. I fucking hate houses designed to make you feel inferior: “wow, these people are so impressive.” And I love homes that make you feel comfortable. There’s a certain type of house where I just want to put some slippers on, take a nap, eat a meal with friends and never leave. That’s the kind of house I aspire to design.
And I so relate to the section on Bean. Oaxaca has like 1,000 street dogs and Iris would happily adopt them all. I’ve also wanted to write about humans, kids, dogs, and the good and bad of cross-species love … but haven’t had the clarity or courage to do so. Maybe that’s a topic for our first Substack collaboration!?
Yes yes yes to your ideal home - I can’t wait to visit yalls home one day and put some slippers on and eat a meal and take a nap :) That’s exactly the aura that Anya and I have been curating in the past year and I can see it resonate every time we have folks over.
And yes! Collaboration post is long overdue.. im gonna DM you about that bc I have notes on a few different topics we’ve overlapped on.
Reading this just brought back all my feelings for Bean :’( I hope he’s doing well
